Number one in the state versus number two. The conference championship on the line. Senior night. And the biggest crowd of the year at Memorial Field. The stage was set Wednesday night for an epic battle and Rockford and East Grand Rapids lived up to the billing, playing a ferocious game that the Pioneers won 12-8.
The weather was a far cry from the first time the teams met this season, when the Rams defeated the Pioneers in a driving snowstorm in double overtime. Wednesday, the sun was shining as brightly as the game's stars in the first half.
After Rockford jumped out to a 2-0 lead, Eliana LaMange cut the East deficit to 2-1, but the Rams scored the next two goals to extend the lead to 4-1. East answered with four straight goals by Mary Schumar, Audrey Whiteside, Blaise Gourley, and Whiteside again to take the lead at 5-4 before Rockford scored the last goal of the first half to tie the game at 5-5.
In the second half, East scored the first three goals, with Schumar and Whiteside finding the net before Sophie Forstner scored off a rebound of a Schumar shot to give the Pioneers an 8-5 lead. East added goals by Whiteside, Schumar, Lucy Cavanaugh, and Lizzie Lundeen to secure the 12-8 victory. Lily Kate Rogers had several key saves to earn the win in goal for the Pioneers.
The game was the first time Rockford has lost to a team in Michigan since 2016, a defeat that also came at the hands of the Pioneers. With the win, East earns a share of the conference championship with Rockford and the Pioneers finish the season number one in the Laxnumbers rankings as the top-ranked team in the state in any division heading into the playoffs.
Next up for East is a home playoff game against Northview Thursday at 5:30pm at Memorial Field.
