"In all my years of being around athletics, never has a loss felt so much like a victory."
That's what East Grand Rapids head coach Ingrid Fournier said after her team lost 6-2 to state power Dexter on the road Thursday night in the first round of the state playoffs.
The Pioneers fought valiantly all night against a tough Dexter squad. In the closing minutes, trailing 5-0, East earned its first offensive corner of the game. Bridget Hollen passed the ball to Emma Brinks, who set it up for Sophie Forstner. Forstner toe dragged around a Dreadnaught defender and fired a shot on goal. Betsy Beusse tipped the ball to Hollen, who deflected it into the net for the first Pioneer goal.
Then, on the last play of the game, East earned a second offensive corner. Hollen passed the ball to Ella Gebben, who scored on a powerful shot. For Gebben, a senior, it was her first goal on the last play of her high school career.
"This team should be very proud of its persistence, positiveness, and power to play to the final second," Fournier said after the game.
